Just discovered this amazing singer thanks to an episode of Bones (sometimes I'm more thankful for the music than the actual entertainment value of the drama it's featured in). 

Soulful voice, haunting lyrics- there's also something easing about her voice and music. Like a powerful but gentle breeze. Yeah, I love oxymorons :-)

Today's a midweek holiday, and the perfect time for just putting life on pause and 'being'. So it's a good thing that this song played early morning. Made me nostalgic (remember Party of Five?!). Also made me sing along and dance :-)

So I went on a Tonic trip the other day, and discovered a few classics of thiers I love. I seem to be posting alot of 90s music (or in this case 90s initiated bands), but guess that's where the heart lies. Rock was so...wholesome back then.

Travelling blues!

So I'm still on my 90s trip these days, and today I rediscovered Blues Traveler! I used to love these guys. I really did have great taste in music as a kid (I was in the 10-12 age group when these were released), didn't I?! Hopefully I'll pass on the genes someday :-)

Rihanna's girly side

It's so refreshing to see Rihanna frolicking around in a meadow full of flowers, and wearing glittery headbands. Maybe she felt she was getting a bit too 'hard' core with her last few songs. Of course, the lyrics are  contradictory to the video, but I like that about it. It manages to combine femininity with feminism :-)

And how pretty is that tree decorated with lit up dresses?!

Caught up on my dose of Natalie Merchant today. It simply reaffirmed my belief that the 90s was one of the best decades in music.

She reminds me of Sarah Mclachlan...but that's another post altogether!

Trance: the early years

Here they are- the songs that introduced me to trance! Of course I had no clue what trance was back when I was 14, and I probably haven't gained that much more exposure since, but I loved them then and I still think they make for some pretty awesome music.

You don't just listen to a Kings of Leon song; you feel it. It's the sort of song you want to keep to yourself, and greedily listen to when you're alone. Although this new one-and a few others I managed to listen to from their  latest album 'Come around sundown'- don't create as big an impact as those from the previous album 'Only by the night', it still leaves you wanting more.

Sex on fire indeed.

Breakup angst

Guys always seem sorrier.

If I try to think up my top 5 break up, misery laden songs they will almost all be sung by men.When it comes to being shattered and willing to do anything to get the relationship back on track, male artists seem to get it spot on. They admit to being wrong, to not being able to live without you, and they promise to wait forever.Basically, they sound more anguished. Which really helps when you're nursing a broken heart. For example:

Female artists in return, seem to see beyond the pain. They are hurt, but they know they deserve better, and they will miss you but it is for the best. The girls are the voice of reason. Which isn't as satisfying as the anguish, but helps the process. For example:

Actually, there's more balance between the two lists than I thought (the minute Sinead made it to the list, I kinda had to eat my words). Guess heartbreak always hurts, with or without reason. Although I could think up the first list much faster than the second!

Duffy

So Duffy's back! Her amazing voice and powerful lyrics quickly made her one of my favourite female artists. While her earlier album 'Rockferry' had a central theme of being self-reflective and then being assertive and moving away from a relationship (think Mercy, Rockferry, Stepping Stone, Warwick Avenue), her soon to be released album titled 'Endlessly' looks like it's continuing the journey of self discovery, this time on a more positive and hopeful note.
